Mardi Gras kicks off again tonight — in an hour or so Brent and I will make our annual pilgrimage through the city to the Opera House where, bathed in the pink light of a flawless Sydney dusk, we will join with our big queer family and begin the three weeks of the year we claim as our own. The launch is a real feel-good occasion: everyone is there, it’s air-kisses and squeals and flirtatious I-remember-you smiles and there’s a real sense of "look at us, aren’t we fabulous, sitting on the Opera House steps and carrying on like we own this city, which for the next few weeks, honey, we do".
